One computer, many workstations.
Here¡¯s the interesting feature of the office station L100 by Ncomputing (www.ncomputing.com): A small black box with captivating design.
Surprisingly, it weights very little (less than 400gr), also because of its external power supply.
On the back panel are located the sockets for power supply, speakers (mini jack), keyboard (PS2), mouse(PS2), ethernet (RJ45) and Video (VGA).
The package includes software for pc which will host the various Workstations and that supports connectivity, using a ¡°remote station¡± technology that goes by the name of WoIP and LoIP, patented by Ncomputing anf comparable, at least by performances, to the one of terminal server by Microsoft. It means that each terminal connected, will display its owner desktop, with totally independent action from other terminals.
At boot Up, the software searches in the network for a PC on which the connectivity software has been installed.
Once found, it inputs its name in a scrolling menu, from which it will be possible it to create a connection.
Before doing so, it is possible to modify some parameters of the network configuration and of the video resolution (supported up to 1024 x 768 at 16 bit).
For one test, we have connected 5 workstations to a PC with embedded Intel Pentium 4 at 3,0 GHz with 1GB RAM and HD of 150GB at 7200rpm.
The operating System was win XP SP2, but the unit, according to the producer, can work also in Linux. Our PC managed very well, the load of 3 workstations but up to 5 all running, we starting experiencing a distinct slowdown of the performance.
It is important to say that the PC we have used was probably unfit for a 5 workstations.
The advantage of this solution consists in multiplying workstations without raising the cost.
Furthermore, there is a substantial saving in space opposed to the use of more computers.
Potentially, we can achieve a great saving on maintenance and hardware expenses, because there is only one PC.
A solution of this type could be appealing also to provide a user with more workstations, keeping indeed just one configuration (the same desktop, the same programs, the same mailk client¡¦).
